Riverside Humane Society’s 16th Annual Walk With The Animals Set for March 22 at Fairmount Park

Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge Named Grand Marshal

RIVERSIDE, CA, February 19, 2008 – Riverside Humane Society Pet Adoption Center (RHSPAC) presents its 16th Annual Walk With The Animals on March 22 from 8 a.m. to noon at Fairmount Park (band shell, area 4) in Riverside. Grand Marshal for the two-mile walk around Lake Evans is Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge with his adopted dog Sundance. Proceeds from the event help provide care and shelter for the cats and dogs who are awaiting adoption at RHSPAC.

Registration for walkers and their dogs, or cats, starts at 8:00 a.m. The walk begins promptly at 9:00 following opening ceremonies. The Walk With The Animals event is free and open to the public. Participation in the walk is not required. There will be food, entertainment, animal-related exhibits, and activities for all ages.

Walk participants are encouraged to collect pledges to sponsor their effort. The registration/pledge form is available online at http://www.petsadoption.com/events.htm, or may be picked up at RHSPAC, 6165 Industrial Ave., Riverside, or by calling RHSPAC at 951-688-4340, ext. 312.

First prize for the walker collecting the most pledge money is a Saturday night stay for two in a suite at the beautiful Historic Mission Inn, plus Sunday brunch. Second prize is Sunday brunch for two at the Historic Mission Inn. The top business team will be recognized with a commemorative plaque installed in the Society’s new Pet Adoption Center. All walkers raising $75 in pledge money will receive a free Walk t-shirt.

The event starts with a hearty pancake breakfast served from 8 – 11 a.m. Cost is $4 for pancakes, $1 for a beverage. Activities throughout the morning include demonstrations by Muttley Crew K-9 Entertainment, Riverside Police Department’s K-9 unit, Owner-Pet Look-Alike and Most Talented/Clever Pet contests, bake sale and boutique for people and pets, and a raffle for numerous prizes. Many animal-related exhibits and rescue groups will offer information, products and services, as well as animals available for adoption. There will be free water and pet cleanup bags.

Riverside County Dept. of Animal Services will provide rabies vaccinations and microchipping. Spay/neuter vouchers will be available. Cindy Tait, president, Center for Healthcare Education, will be on hand to administer first aid to humans and Dr. Allan Drusys, chief veterinarian, Riverside County Dept. of Animal Services, will provide first aid for pets.

“For people who love sharing life with their four-legged best buddies, Walk With The Animals is unbeatable for a fun-filled morning,” says Katie Wider, Walk chairwoman. “Pets who enjoy socializing with people and other animals are guaranteed enough sights and smells to fill their dreams for weeks.”

“In addition, people attending the event will leave with a really good feeling of having helped dogs and cats waiting to be adopted by a best buddy of their own,” Wider adds. “We hope everyone will come spend some time at the Walk and enjoy the activities, entertainment, and camaraderie of animal-loving people.”

The Riverside Humane Society Pet Adoption Center is a non-profit public benefit charitable organization. The center accepts owner turn-ins of cats and dogs and transfers from area animal-control shelters. No healthy, adoptable animal is ever put to sleep. Prior to adoption, each animal is either spayed or neutered and microchipped, receives all necessary vaccinations and medical care, is monitored for physical, emotional and mental health, and is socialized.
